It is generally understood that the loss of production caused by internal parasites is largely due to them removing nutrients from the animal. However, a recent review showed that a primary response to parasite burden is a reduction in grazing time. The reduced grazing time means a reduction in pasture intake and, naturally, weight gain so the response to eliminating worms may not just be related to the affect of the burden on the cow but also on the feed intake.
