THE USE of crimp frequency as an indicator of fibre diameter is unreliable and outdated. However, it can still be used as an indicator of fibre diameter if crimp distinctness or definition is considered as the main guide, and not frequency. The more distinct or defined the crimp is, the finer the wool is likely to test. As handle is also strongly related to fibre diameter, a combination of crimp definition and handle will give a reliable indication of fibre diameter. With practice, fleece structure attributes will provide further clues as to the mean fibre diameter and uniformity of fleeces.
