TO MANY people, a market garden in the Great Sandy Desert would seem about as feasible as growing wheat on salt - possible, but only just, and not very smart. But as far-fetched as the concept may seem, the idea of growing vegetables in an almost nil-rainfall environment has been operating as a successful business for more than 10 years. This year marks 23 years of growing vegetables in Western Australia's far north for Shelamar, a cattle station 205 kilometres south of Broome and 410km north of Port Hedland.
