AWARD-WINNING exporter of calf and cattle hides, Victorian Hide and Skin Producers, is working to change Australian agriculture's byproduct view of the leather industry. It is foreshadowing the use of abattoir and producer premiums in an effort to achieve change, cut wastage and boost leather quality. The company, based at Laverton on the western outskirts of Melbourne, is working with several Australian meat processors in an effort to identify premiums and assess how they might be best passed back through the processing chain to producers, according to its managing director, Allan Rich.
