THE RAPID retreat of governments from direct involvement in rural marketing through statutory boards has shifted the marketing burden onto the shoulders of individual farmers. Not many farmers are renowned for their selling skills, a shortcoming thatoriginally sparked the creation of statutory boards with powers to compul-sorily acquire and collectively market key farm commodities notably grains, wool, milk and sugar.
