摘要

The requirement of physical and mechanical characteristic of engineering materials depends on the specific industrial application. Heat treatment process has emerged as a robust scheme to incorporate variations in the microstructural, physical and mechanical properties of steel materials. Since, heat treatment is the process of the variation in temperature, time and quenching media to introduce characteristics changes, and hence selection of these variables is must. In this investigation, heat treatment of case hardening low carbon material 16Mn5Cr4 has been done. The performed experimental process comprises annealing and hardening at 760℃, 780℃ and 820℃ which has been followed by quenching with salt and oil at 180℃ and 60℃ respectively. The tempering has been performed to introduce optimal hardness and ductility, strength and stress relieving. This research illustrated that heat treated 16Mn5Cr4 material shows better cutting efficiency and machinability. The cutting result for surface finish and machinability test has been done using AlCrN coated HSS steel, which exhibit optimal machinability for industrial applications. The corrosion test is performed as per ASTM B 117-2007 standard.
