The competitiveness of building material recycling products still continues to be impeded by unduly high production costs and insufficient quality. The impact crusher which, according to a unanimous agreement of manufacturers and - operators surveyed - will also remain the generally preferred crushing equipment for building material recycling in future, will have to be adjusted to the demands of an actual recycling - not downcycling. After single-piece tests with concrete balls in an impact crusher (500 x 500), the effect of several process and mechanical parameters of the crusher on the energy consumption of crushing as well as on particle size distribution and the degree of liberation of the crusher product was analysed. To minimise the excessive wear at the baffle plates during crushing of building rubble, an impact wear test unit was used to determine the wear behaviour of various raw materials when subjected to impact stress.
