Over the past 15 years, shipbuilding in Australia has come to a sad decline. Few vessels built or upgraded, apart from a few lobster vessels and trawlers, but nothing of any significance.How different from years gone by when in nearly every shipyard in Australia, especially in South Australia and Western Australia, a keel was ready for building.Those were exciting times with high expectations and great competition between yards, and status symbols were measured by how many metres the vessel was, fish capacity and how expensive the navigation equipment was on board ships. Yards were trying to outdo each other, competition was fierce! However, it wasn't to last.I have written about it in the past, what caused the shipbuilding industry to collapse. The fish resources was not always to blame.Canberra's often naive, poorly thought out fisheries management, operated by people with little or no experience, was largely at fault.A large percentage must firmly be passed on to AFMA. Its constant negative assessments stifled even the most optimistic in industry, making it indeed difficult to have any confidence to invest in new vessels or infrastructure.
