Filtration selection and operation: criteria for selection of screen filtration for irrigation applications

The first step in selection of a filtration system is to properly define the application. Many filter systems are over or under-specified because the initial application is not properly considered. In general terms protection of the smallest orifice in the system is what we are trying to achieve. Therefore in drip systems it is the dripper pathway or regulating chamber that will be the smallest and in sprinkler systems in is usually the sprinkler nozzle but in some cases could be other equipment suchas solenoids on valves. It is fair to say that we now have guidelines and recommendations from drip and sprinkler manufacturers that will determine filtration degree but not always is this the final data that will determine filtration type.
