National citrus scion breeding program: Breeding new citrus varieties to expand the markets

Project CT04007 is a new project and continues the research conducted previously as CT00012, which finished June 30, 2004. The Final Report for CT00012 is available and contains detailed information about the breeding program and progress towards objectives. The following is an update on progress during the last 12 months for the uiew project. Components of project CT04007 are conducted at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Merbein and Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (QDPI&F), Bundaberg. At Merbein, the focus is conventional cross-breeding and evaluation, while at Bundaberg work concentrates on producing sterile triploid varieties, which have 50% more chromosomes than normal citrus trees and are thus generally seedless. Mutation breeding is also conducted at both sites.
