Global marketplace hungry for more

The effects of a tight 12 months for the supply of dairy commodities continue to be felt on global markets, as the Australian 2013-14 season begins to gather pace. Market indicators reflect the shortfall in product availability from key exporting regions as those who can afford to - or who must - secure product are in the market. Four of the five GlobalDairyTrade events since mid-June recorded increases to the overall price index. Some products are seeing two-tiered pricing, with butter for Russia and powders for northern Asia attracting high premiums. Overall demand remains firm, despite some buyers being priced out of the market. Although production conditions are gradually improving in key exporting regions, dramatic growth in global milk outputappears some way off.
