Something quite extraordinary has occurred recently in the worlds of bonsai and of fine art photography. This event—the publication of Fine Bonsai: Art and Nature by Jonathan Singer and William Valavanis—involves nearly surreal serendipity, unique talent and fortitude, and much, much synergy. The central figure in all this is Dr. Jonathan Singer. Dr. Singer is a former podiatrist living in New Jersey. He is, by profession, someone quite unlikely to be at the center of remarkable artistic achievement; however, careers combine in unpredictable ways. The celebrated author, William Carlos Williams, was a physician who lived in Patterson, New Jersey—not far from Jonathan's home in Bayonne. As Williams loved literature, Jonathan has always loved art. His university education included just enough science to allow for the eventual study of podiatry. His real passion, as his studies showed, was art. As a child, he studied at the Museum of Modern Art and, in college; he studied with Ilya Bolotowsky, an important abstract expressionist painter who was much influenced by Piet Mondrian. Jonathan was strongly influenced by classic Dutch painters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. In particular, the use of light by the Dutch masters captured his artistic imagination. It is the subtle and evocative lighting in his photographs that is so masterful and constitutes his artistic signature and his genius.
