Tapping tips:N.S. maple tour offers producers some off-season professional development

The Maple Producers Association of Nova Scotia (MPANS) held a fall tour in Antigonish County on Sept. 26. For the 45 participants this event offered valuable production tips, fine weather, a wonderful noon meal served at the St. Joseph's Lakeside Community Centre, and the opportunity to experience a part of the province they may not often get to visit.Registration was at Haveracres Maple Farm in St. Josephs, where Jason Haver-kort provided a tour of the sugar camp, including his vacuum system and reverse osmosis machines. Up the hill in the sugar bush, Kevin McCormick helped -out with demonstrations of cleaning tubing; marking tap holes so it is easy to find new wood to drill into next year; and installing main lines, lateral lines, and fittings. McCormick also presented information on vacuum tubing installation and maintenance.
