Important fiber materials for sewing thread are polyester, nylon and cotton. Among such materials, polyester is used the most, accounting for two-thirds of the total, and cotton and nylon are about ten-to-one respectively. From this, it can be understood that synthetic fibers occupy the mainstay. While polyester sewing thread is available in filament and spun varieties (there are also blends with cotton), nylon comes in only the filament type. In addition, nylon and polyester are also available in textured yarn types (wooly yarn) of sewing thread, and are used for sewing elastic fabrics.
