The Toxorhynchites theobald of Madagascar (Diptera : Culicidae)

The taxonomic analysis of a few dozens of adult Toxorhynchites from Madagascar, in the collection of the IRD, at Montpellier, revealed that all the specimens belonged to the dominant subgenus in the Continent, Afrorhynchus Ribeiro, 1991. These Toxorhynchites showing the characters of the new group Pauliani, here described, form a group of sibling species with exceedingly uniform external morphology. Having defined some new characters, mainly in the male genitalia, and using scatter diagrams, five new species were individualized, to be added to Tx. (Afr.) pauliani(Doucet, 1951): Tx. (Afr.) madagascarensis n. sp., Tx. (Afr.) brunhesi n. sp., Tx. (Afr.) grjebinei n. sp., Tx (Afr.) fontenillei n. sp. and Tx. (Afr.) lemuriae n. sp. Identification keys of the males, females, larvae and pupae are proposed. Finally, some theoretical considerations on the systematics and evolution of the Toxorhynchites are made.
