East Timor is seeking UN mediation to try to settle a maritime border dispute with Australia that affects the Sunrise gas field and the Bayu Undan-Darwin LNG project. East Timor has launched compulsory conciliation proceedings under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) to force the Australian government to agree permanent maritime boundaries between the two countries. The 2006 Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea (CMATS) treaty defines the maritime boundary between the two countries. But Dili wants the treaty revoked and the contested area, which includes Sunrise and other key gas projects, returned solely to East Timor.
