More than 40 Chinese insurance companies and asset managers have set up a new company to invest 40bn yuan ($6.1bn) in shipping infrastructure, including vessels for the planned 16.5mn t/yr Yamal LNG project in Russia. The new venture, China Insurance Investment, is designed to support Beijing’s “one belt, one road” strategy to cultivate economic and political ties on the old Silk Road trade routes. But one of its initial moves will be to inject capital into China LNG (CLNG), a subsidiary of shipping firm China Merchants Energy Shipping, to indirectly invest in vessels for the Yamal project.
