THE Competition Tribunal has heard arguments for the merger of two producers of andalusite, in the face of fierce resistance from the country's major refractory consumers. There are just two andalusite producers in SA, supplying the domestic market with the alumina-silicate mineral used to make refractory bricks, Imerys SA, a subsidiary of the French multinational industrial minerals company Imerys, wants to merge with Andalusite Resources, a private company said to be the world's second-largest source of the mineral.
