Sustained crude gains could boost spot LNG buying

Continued gains in crude prices are likely to encourage northeast Asian LNG buyers to purchase LNG on a spot basis for the winter to take advantage of its large discount to oil-linked term prices. The possibility of military action by the US and its allies against Syria caused a surge of $3.63/bl in Ice Brent crude futures — its largest day-on-day gain this year — to $114.36/ bl on 27 August. Ice Brent futures settled at $116.12/bl on 6 September, up by 86￠/bl on the day and $7.94/bl higher than a month earlier, before the threat of an attack.
