UK power sector gas consumption increased in the sec-ond half of November because of lower wind generation and higher aggregate electricity demand.The drop in wind genera-tion was partly offset by higher nuclear output after the return of some plants last month.EdF restarted three units in late November totalling 1.76GW of capacity that had been off line since 11 August.But day-ahead spark spreads—adjusted for emissions—widened to encourage higher gas-fired gen-eration,in part owing to the higher overall electricity demand. Gas-fired generation on 25 November reached its highest since 17 July.The increase in power sector gas demand so far this winter compared with a year earlier has also been because of the closure of coal-fired capacity in recent years.Coal-fired generation in October-November was 18.1pc lower than a year earlier and 31.7pc down on the same period in 2012.
