Taiwan has a special place in the global bonsai scene. With the Tropic of Capricorn bisecting the island country, it naturally has fast growing tropical species, but due to relatively high mountains it also supports many cooler growing temperate species. It's no wonder the first European explorers that visited Taiwan called it Formosa, or beautiful island. The bonsai trees on the island reflect that beauty via the unique Taiwanese bonsai style, an impressive yet refined approach to bonsai. The Far Fong exhibition, meaning Chinese Spirit, aims to capture that spirit by displaying trees from all over the island in a national exhibition. A large exhibition hall in the center of Taipei, set up with a stage and sound system, was the setting for the Far Fong exhibition in October 2012. The event kicked off with speeches by Su Tsung Tsang, a Taiwanese politician, who spoke about how bonsai could reflect the Taiwanese spirit and help bring stability and peace to both Taiwan and the world. Mr. Chen then made a generous donation to the show organizers to fund the event. Over 350 trees were on display with 154 submitted for judging. The other trees were special non-judged entries, previously awarded trees.
