International price movements, especially in Brazil, are being closely assessed by US players as Q4 contract negotiations approach. The market is in a seasonal lull right now and no firm price ideas on Q4 have yet to be voiced. The North American market has been described as balanced. Production in the US has been steady amid high refinery utilization rates. Sulphur production from crude refining was up 410,000t during the first six months of 2014 compared with the first half of 2013. Some of this was attributable to crude with higher sulphur content crude (ex-Canada) being refined in the Midwest post BP Whiting ramp up.
