Mobberley looks atielect band of nebulae thatorighten, fade and flicker, andow amateurs monitoring themcan play an important part in understanding them.
Hubble's Variable Nebula is one of those objects thatmany amateurs recall seeing an image of, but are neverquite sure where to find it! Perhaps its proximity to theRosette Nebula(roughly four degrees to the south-south--west) and the deep sky gems found in Orion tend tolure amateurs away from this remarkable object. Thereis a huge amount of larger nebulosity in the region andNGC 2264 is only a degree to the north-north-east. Also, perhaps there is a subconscious view that it is probablyfar more difficult to spot than it actually is: in fact, in anylarge amateur telescope it is an easy magnitude +10 object
