Improved Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) in dry beans would help to improve yields, increase the area where dry beans can be grown, and reduce dependence on N fertilizer inputs. A black bean recombinant inbred line (RIL) population resulting from across of the landrace selection Puebla 152 and the commercial cultivar Zorro was developed to study the genetics of BNF and transfer the enhanced BNF ability of Puebla 152 (Type III growth habit) into the efficient Zorro (Type II). RILs were genotyped using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers from the BARCBean6K_3 Beadchip developed as part of the BeanCAP project. Phenotypic data was recorded in the field, greenhouse, and lab. QTL for traits such as root biomass and distribution, biomass, andpercent N derived from the atmosphere, which are associated with BNF were identified. These QTL may serve as markers for further breeding of genotypes with enhanced BNF.
