BONSAI AUTUMN, SWITZERLAND: SULISTYO STYLES A SPRUCE

This past summer I was one of the headlin-ers invited to Bonsai Autumn 2011, held on August 27 and 28 in Switzerland. I was the only Asian among the headliners who were all European, like Mauro Stemberger, Enrico Savini, MarkNoelanders, Zino Rongo, Carlos van der Vaart and Rene De Boni. There were some fine specimens to choose from and I selected a wild Spruce or Picea abies. The tree has two trunks and I thought I would be able to do something with it. All seven headliners and their assistants wereon one main stage, and Walter Pall, a renowned bonsai artist from Germany, was the moderator for the demonstrations. After cutting the plastic pot to make it easier to work on the tree, I looked at the distribution of the roots. The two trunks were connected by one strong root. I cut off the root and took out the small tree. Another strong branch on the main tree was also cut away, so that there was only one line of the trunk that naturally bent down and raised up again.
