Recent years have brought considerable positive development of waste Incineration plants in respectof their environmental behaviour, fuel engineering and economic efficiency. However, the processingand utilization of the incineration residue, the grate ash, still prove problematic. The opportunities forgathering experience over a wider area have been very limited, as a different starting situation isencountered in almost every waste incineration plant. The composition and condition of the wastesvary considerably both at the individual plants themselves as well on a regional level. Moreover, theincineration process and design concept are rarely comparable from plant to plant. The variations inthe waste incineration plants are reflected correspondingly in the processing plants for their grate ash.As there are only few suppliers offering this type of plant construction on the market, the current levelof know-how and the experience gained so far are not very extensive and only available at a fewplaces from a few specialists. lt is therefore commendable that a group of these experts has combinedindividual experience and findings to draw up "Nine Ground Rules for the Processing of Grate Ash"which, despite the different requirements at the various plants, can claim universial validity.
