Future emission, fuel consumption, comfort and driveability requirements result in very complex drive train systems with a high number of application parameters. The respective efforts for engine development, including application and calibration increases significantly (4). The parallel trend to shorten development duration requires new engineering methodologies. Closer interaction between mechanics and electronics, use of virtual methods and computer assisted calibration for several development targets are some examples. The approach described in this paper shows how online DOE (Design Of Experiments), modern engine modelling techniques and the software tool CAMEO can be used to simplify the EMS calibration and software tools for a virtual and a real development. The method AVL-DRI-VE for an objective assessment of vehicle driveability quality and vehicle driveability character in the car, on test beds and in the simulation is used to allow computer assisted calibration of all development targets performance, emissions, fuel consumption and driveability simultaneously.
