World-wide harmonization of motor vehicle regulations and mutual recognition of certification -accession to the UN/ECE 1958 agreement-

On November 24, 1998, Japan acceded to the UN/ ECE 1958 Agreement as the 33{sup}rd contracting party and thc equipment type approval system was introduced, which meets the trend of sharing same equipment among several vehicles types. At the timeof the accession, Japan adopted 5 Regulations (ECE Regulations No.3,7,13H, 19,28) and the mutual recognition of motor vehicle equipment under the UN/ECE 1958. Agreement started. This paper reports the summary and effects of the Agreement and the equipment type approval system, and the policy of thc Ministry of Transport.
