This paper describes the history of the technical developments undertaken for the purpose of meeting the current Japanese exhaust regulations while improving both engine power and fuel economy simultaneously. Also discussed are some new approaches which have been adopted in the recently introduced high BMEP engine. These new and important advances include the adoption of an electronically controlled common rail fuel injection pump, centrally located fuel injectors, 4 valve cylinder head, ductilecast iron pistons and a mixed-flow turbine turbocharger. This paper also discusses the possibility of new combustion concepts. that is, premixed diesel engines such as PREDIC and MULDIC.
