Automotive companies are continually searching for new methodologies both to reduce engine development time and to improve the quality of engine calibration. The main development targets are: to reduce the time-to-market, to reduce fuelconsumption and emissions, and to improve drivability. Currently, most-steady-state calibration is carried out on engine test beds and most transient calibration work, such as drivability, catalyst heating strategies etc., are done on vehicles. In future, these tasks will he increasingly done (to test beds that simulate the real vehicle and are capable of automatically mapping and calibrating the engine in steady and transient state conditions.
