The Phoenix Project, The Pentagon -- Arlington, Virginia

At 10:30 A.M. on September 11, 2001, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the Pentagon, KCE Structural Engineers, P.C., a consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., was called in to provide emergency assistance to the Military District of Washington, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Pentagon Renovation Program. KCE provided emergency stabilization analysis and immediately began investigating the foundation, evaluating material strengths, and determining which areas were to be demolished and which methods were to be used in the demolition. Early estimates suggested that rebuilding the damaged portion of the Pentagon could take three to four years. As it turned out, an unprecedented degree of cooperation on the part of engineers, contractors, and emergency personnel resulted in substantial completion of the work-dubbed the Phoenix Project-just one year after the attack.
