Steel Bridges, Concrete Canoes, Field Trips Abound During ASCE's Largest National Student Conference

For the first time in ASCE's history, the National Concrete Canoe Competition, the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, and the competition for the Daniel W. Mead Prize for Students will be held at the same time and in the same place. With the addition of a public service project, sessions on the history and heritage of civil engineering, and a career fair, this will be the largest national ASCE student event ever held. The ASCE 150th Anniversary National Student Conference, scheduled for June 20-24 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, also will include field trips, "concrete bowling" competitions, and balsa wood bridge competitions.The student conference is a unique event and will provide a great networking and career-building opportunity for students across the country. Besides ASCE, the sponsors include Cleve-land-based Master Builders Technologies (MBT) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Many other sponsors and donors are working behind the scenes to make the conference an invaluable experience. Several Wisconsin institutions of higher learning - the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the College of Engineering Mathematics and Science at the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, the College of Engineering at Marquette University, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering - are hosting the event, with help also coming from the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
