Emergence and fate of the residues from the German paper industry-Results of the residue survey 2004

In 2004,a survey was conducted by VDP and PTS among the German pulp and paper producers to establish their water and residue situations.The results of the survey covering 73 German paper mills producing 68 of Germany's gross production are presented focusing on the residue situation,the residue arising and the ways of disposal and utilisation.Due to the increasing production quantities the residue quantity in Germany's paper industry has increased in recentyears.The specific arising of residues decreased slightly compared to the previous surveys and accounted for 187 kg/t paper in 2004.The results of the survey show the success of Germany's paper industry in increasing the amount of utilised residues.The share of residues used for materials recycling or energy recovery has increased evidently in recent years and accounted for 91 in 2004.Still approximately 250000t residues were dumped in 2004.According to the technical instruction on municipal waste(TASi)new capacities for disposal or utilisation have to be found in 2005 for a large proportion of these residues.The consequences arising from the end of the transitional arrangement for landfilling in May 2005 and resulting difficulty in finding alternative disposal routes cause big problems in the companies.
