Styling Cypress Type Trees

These photographs were taken in the Saddle Road area in the central part of the Big Island of Hawaii where Monterey Cypress thrive. At this higher elevation, the climate is very similar to Monterey, California where these trees naturally develop beautiful shapes. Although the primary structure of Monterey Cypress, Cupressus macrocarpa, and other similar trees start with apical dominant single apex-tier branching, as growing conditions change, the structures of the trees also change. Notice that, while some stay as single apex (Figure 1 8c 2))with a narrow pointed crown (that often become bleached driftwood spires called "jin") (Figure 3), others develop arching branches and a flattened crown.
