Regional Bonsai Care: Buttonwoods

As regular readers know, the purpose of the ABS Regional Care series is to explore how bonsai enthusiasts in various different geographical areas deal differently with specific aspects of bonsai care. Sometimes we deal with basic care topics such as fertilizer, soil, etc. Sometimes we deal with general techniques such as defoliation (and our next topic: major restyling). But we also like to sprinkle in a more than occasional look at a specific species and its care. Most general sources act as thoughthere is a single cookbook calendar for the care of a given species. However we all know that defoliating a maple in Atlanta is different than in Toronto, and the best soil for a pine in Los Angeles may kill a pine in Detroit. However no species has a wider variation in not only care, but even ability to keep it alive than buttonwood.
