The opportunity of nighttime driving has been increasing every year and nighttime driving speed has also been increased. In view of this traffic situation and an effort to realize safer and more comfortable nighttime driving, automotive lighting technology has been evolving continuously as a measure to enhance preventive safety. We present the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) as a practical approach to improvement of nighttime driving visibility without increasing undue dazzle to other road users. In addition, signaling equipment using LED light sources is presented as an approach to increasing the awareness of other road users to the light signals pending vehicle maneuver.
