Lower demand for crude from Japan because of refinery shutdowns following the 11 March earthquake weighed on Mideast Gulf crude prices and widened the arbitrage for car- goes to move to the US west coast (see upper graph). Prompt supplies of medium sour Oman, Iraqi Basrah Light and Russian ESPO Blend are available in the US west coast market.
