Russia’s river tanker fleet shrank last year, with some older vessels redirected to the Caspian, Azov and Black seas. The number of vessels involved in exporting products along Russia’s Volga-Don and Volga-Baltic waterways fell by 31 to 417 last year — 287 tankers and 130 barges, compared with 325 tankers and 123 barges in 2013. The fleet’s average age was 25 years, down from just over 26 years in 2013. In all, 100 tankers and barges with an age of less than 10 years — 24pc of the fleet — were deployed. This compares with 22pc in 2013. Tankers and barges with an age of over 40 years made up over 16pc of the fleet, compared with 19.3pc in 2013.
