Cytology of canine leproid granuloma in a Rottweiler

A 3-year-old male Rottweiler with non-responsive multiple ulcerated and alopecic nodules on skin of face and back were aspirated for biopsies and microscopy. We observed numerous macrophages with variable lymphocytes, plasma cells and fewer neutrophils. Within macrophages we detected medium length bacilli. Histologically, the lesions were chiefly pyogranulomatous within the dermis. Pyogranulomas were composed chiefly of macrophages, epitheloid cells, neutrophils, and fewer lymphocytes or plasma cellsand rare giant cells. A large number of acid-fast bacilli were found within the cytoplasm of many macrophages by Ziehl-Neelsen stain but could not be cultivated in vitro. A diagnosis of canine leproid granuloma was made based on findings.
