Disposition of cefepime in goats.

Serum, tissue fluid (TCF) and milk cefepime concentrations after intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration were determined in 10 lactating goats with and without tissue damage produced by 1 and 8 weeks after tissue cage implant. Twenty mg/kg cefepime was given IV and IM every 7 days. TCF total protein/total serum protein ratios were 83.8 one week and 67.5% eight weeks after cage implant (p< 0.05), serum AUC 98.5 + 5.3 and 68.5 + 11.1 mug/ml/h (p< 0.05), clearance 208 + 13 and 370 + 40 ml/h/kg (p< 0.05), TCF AUC 89.6 + 11.6 and 177.1 + 15 mug/ml/h, TCF Cmax 17.6 + 2.4 and 38.8 + 6.1 mug/ml (p< 0.05) but in milk, only 8.7 + 1.7 and 9.6 + 1.6 %, respectively. After IM injections serum AUC was 57.7 + 4.0 and 95.7 + 12.3 mug/ml/h (p< 0.05);serum half-life 0.1 + 0.02 and 0.5 + 0.1 h; tmax (serum), 0.4 + 0.1 and 1.0 + 0.1 h (p< 0.05) and milk 8.5 + 1.7 and 9.0 + 2.7%; respectively. Results suggest that cefepime given IM or IV to lactating goats yields high serum and tissue levels but low ones in milk.
