Effect of packaging materials on postharvest characters of Chrysanthemum cv. Birbal Sahni for local and nearby markets

A study was carried out to evaluate the influence of various wrapping materials, (LDPE 100 gauge, PP 100 gauge, Cellophane, and Newspaper) on the storage and vase life of Chrysanthemum for local and nearby markets. Vase life, flower quality, and floret opening were significantly influenced by wrapping material. Among the different wrapping materials, the maximum vase life for both, flowers (12.80 days) and leaves (5.98 days) were observed in LDPE-100 gauge which was significantly at par with PP-100 gauge (12.28 days) for flower and (5.94 days) for leaves. Water uptake per stem (32.50 ml), and floret opening (91.45%) were all highest in flowers wrapped in PP 100 gauge. Besides, flowers wrapped in PP 100 gauge lose minimum weight (13.72 %) after transit, while maintaining a larger flower diameter (4.18 cm) in a vase for a maximum number of days.
