UK grocery sales hit new record amid price inflation

The UK's grocery sales rose by 9.4% y/y to reach a new record at ￡12.8 billion ($15.39 billion) in December. This is the fastest growth rate recorded since February 2021, according to Kantar research. December's grocery sales were ￡1.1 billion higher than the prior-year period, essentially driven by price inflation instead of the increased volume (-1% y/y). “For example, value sales of mince pies soared by 19% but volume purchase barely increased at all,” one analyst at Kantar said.
