The Growing Role Of Russian Scrap

In 1999 in Russia scrap collection was about 16,9 million tons It is the maximum value for last 5 years. Domestic consumers has got unprecedented in recent years volume of scrap -approximately 9 million tons. Export of scrap last year was about 7,9 million tons (including 7.1 million tons - to countries outside CIS). If at the beginning of the year export supplies of scrap increased quickly, greatly exceeding corresponding rates in 1998. But after introducing an export duty of 15 Euro/tonne in May export volumes began to fall gradually, becoming lower, then in 1997.Essential growing of scrap collection (even more high, than in Russia) was observed also in other ex-USSR countries. In Ukraine nearly double increase of scrap collection during two years has occurred: from 4,2 million tons in 1997 to 8,2 million tons in 1999. In Latvia scrap collection for this period also has increased practically in 2 times, in Moldova-approximately in 2,5 times.
