World output remained strong in first half

World crude steel putout in June was lower than in the same month last year, according to the latest figures from the International Iron & Steel Institute (IISI). Production in the 64 countries covered by the 1181's regular report was 68.27m tonnes, down by 1.1 percent from the 69.54m tonnes produced in the same month last year.This took total crude steel output for the first half of 2001 to 413.12m tonnes, just 0.3 percent down from the 414.26m tonnes produced in the same period last year when world output hit a record level.The dip in June production was most pronounced in North America where total output fell by 16.4 percent over the same period last year. US output in the first half saw a 12.8 percent decrease compared with January to June 2000. Production in the Middle East was the only region over the last month to report double-digit growth figures at 10.4 above the figures for the same period last year.
