AEP to close all five Muskingum River units

American Electric Power (AEP) will retire its coal-fired 585MW Muskingum River unit 5 in Ohio in 2015. The closure is part of a February settlement to reduce emissions, in which AEP had the option to refuel unit 5 with natural gas or retire it. AEP is unlikely to make the capital investment needed to refuel the unit given current market conditions and the cost of complying with environmental regulations, the company said.
