Exports of western coals to Far East destinations could buoy the coal industry, but uncertainty surrounds it as many pieces of the puzzle remain unfulfilled. Producers acknowledge the vagaries of the export business and railroads are reticent to devote resources to it after the failure of a similar venture, but there is real hope that the market will continue to expand. The shift could increase profits which have been falling along with demand. Savage Services expects coal demand from Asia to increase by nearly 300mn tons by 2025, the company said during the recent Coaltrans Americas conference.
