US coal barge volume to shrink by 10mn st

US coal barge shipments will by slashed by 10mn short tons (9mn metric tonnes) by 2017 as retiring coal plants remove demand from the market. The closure of river-served generating plants through 2016 will cut 14.8mn st of coal traffic from the market, barge operator American Commercial Lines (ACL) said last month at the annual World Trade and Transport Conference in New Orleans.
