Last year China just failed to reach the hugely significant milestone of delivering 1,000 new vessels in a single year. In deadweight terms, the total of 22,063,748 for the 914 ships handed over fell below that of both Korea and Japan, but did set a new record for China. In the first seven months of 2009, deliveries from Chinese yards already stood at 568 ships for 19,199,991dwt. If all ships scheduled for delivery this year were actually produced, the final figures for 2009 would be an astonishing 2,155 ships and 70.4M dwt. For 2010, scheduled deliveries would be less, but the deadweight would be somewhat higher at just under 80M dwt. Those figures highlight China's phenomenal success in shipbuilding where production doubled in the period between 2005 and 2008 and could conceivable double again this year or next.
