Before the economic downturn set in, the maritime communications sector was experiencing a quiet revolution as ship operators began to investigate the advantages of broadband technology. Traditional communication providers had barely begun to get their broader-spectrum systems off the ground before heavy users of data and communications became aware of VSAT's attractions. Improved technology for Ku-band antennae not only extended the service's availability to more ocean areas but also addressed some earlier operational problems. Meanwhile, the wider availability of smaller antennae increased the appeal for larger ships of the more dependable, but expensive, C-band. Communication systems generally require capital outlay on gear and are charged on actual usage, which is fine for operators with low communication needs.
