Installing dual-fuel engines in LNG carriers was a logical first step to bringing the technology into the marine sector. The gas fuel was already being stored on board, so there was no need to address an issue that other ship types would need to consider. But while Wartsila can claim to have been the pioneer in this area and in offshore ships, the 2000-built Norwegian ferry Glutra - hailed as the first LNG-powered vessel - is fitted with four GS12R-MPTK engines from Mitsubishi.
